He was particularly known for his tenure as editor of ''The Atlantic|The Atlantic Monthly'', as well as for his own prolific writings, including the Christmas story "Christmas Every Day" and the novels ''The Rise of Silas Lapham'' and ''A Traveler from Altruria''.
